Mapping contested spaces in Hong Kong through field observation, analytical drawings, archival research, and film studies, Resistant City visualizes the energies and tenacity of people in the territory as manifest in their daily life, social and professional networks, and the urban spaces they inhabit. In dialogue with this season’s talk series on curating architecture, this book launch will explore architect and architectural historian Eunice Seng’s experimental approach to the academic monograph as a creative space of care for the histories, tactics, and spaces of everyday survival in Hong Kong under the hegemonic sway of global capital and unstoppable development. In conversation with architect and architectural historian Tao Zhu, they will reflect upon the pertinence of diversity in perspectives and the implications of “resistant” as the approach towards conserving buildings and urban places.
About the Speakers
Eunice Seng is Associate Professor and Chair of the Departmental Research Postgraduate Committee in Architecture at the University of Hong Kong and founding member of Docomomo HK. Trained as an architect and architectural historian, her work explores various disciplinary intersections and questions of agency in architecture, housing, domesticity and public space.
Tao Zhu is Associate Professor and Deputy Head of Department of Architecture, and Co-director of the Center for Chinese Architecture and Urban Design, The University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on contemporary Chinese architecture and urbanism and his design work has involved consultation on urbanization as well as large scale urban and architectural projects.
